I’ve been doing a lot of drawing lately. Which is awesome. I can do it guilt free for the next week as well having finished my class with an A until next Tuesday when I start the next class. On top of that I have a fair amount of pro bono design work to complete by the end of the month. Busy busy, but better than not busy and you cant wait to do things or you will never do them. A friend told me “You will never have your ducks in a row” which got me thinking about the actual logistical nightmare of trying to get live ducks to line up in a row.
Here are some drawings from this week and some others from the past that figure in with the new ones. The drawing on the left is a study from a sketch book. The one on the right is from a comic about a girl who becomes the host for a symbiotic sentient alien algae. There is the requisite running from the government and falling in love with a robot. She eventually discovers another person also colonized by space algae but a red variety. Together they find out they are basically algae royalty on opposite sides of a bloody war. Well as much as space algae has blood I guess. Sort of Romeo and Juliet in the future with space algae. I wrote the concept and some story at a time I was mildly obsessed with a blue haired girl.
Some things I have been monkey-ing with over the past week. 
A quick sketch then quickly colored in photoshop. I’m gonna be drawing eggs and tentacles for a while.
This is the second drawing. more refined. I think this style of drawing will work nice for comic book stuff.
Lastly, I’ve been drawing a bunch of robot turtles. I don’t remember if there are more or not posted here, but I will make some sort of post with a bunch of them, sometime soonish.
These are sketches I’m doing for some knucklehead’s a friend’s tattoo. For the one on the right I referenced a drawing by Chris Conn for the pose, but I honestly looked at about a hundred girl head tattoos. This is a few drawings removed as well. The next step will be to trace it to line art and scan it into photoshop. There I’m going to make the spider lady symmetrical and comp some colors. Although I have to say i really like the way colored pencil looks on dark paper.
Here is the initial color. Originally I was planing this to be a wind or air elemental type guy, but he’s looking more aquatic now. I think I’m going to do a couple of color studies and decide which way to go from here. Ideally I could do that on the computer, that is if my computer wasn’t run by arthritic squirrels running on a rusty wheel.
I draw a lot of zombies. What can i say.
There’s a ton of stuff I want to put up, but time and computing speeds conspire against me. This is a drawing I did as a character study. It is for a aside story called exterminator, that would be a six page comic addition to amnesiac. I t has William S. Burroughs as an unnamed exterminator fumigating Hugo Blue’s apartment, while they’re both in it and calling into question his recollection of his past.
This is one of the terrible ones from last weekend. It’s still a work in progress, but looks a lot better with some photoshop on it. I have to finish the flat colors and add the shades. This is the first of three drawings I did of storm. the last on is the one I like but it’s a little big to scan here.
The last thing I was working on this weekend was a couple pages of a comic that I don’t have a name for . I used to call it undisclosed metallic injection, which I think might be ok for say a chapter name, but as the title of the book, not so much.I am going to serialize it here when I get it together, maybe three pages at a time.
double post. I’m still figuring out formatting and stuff and it’s still slow going due to my computing power. Anyway. These two seemed to go together. One is from a conceptual drawing class. I forget who the guy is, i think he’s a chemist or something like that. there was a reason I choose him, but I can’t remember what it is. The second is new, it’s a drawing of captain ahab. As far as drawings go I like it, but its not as mindlessly obsessed as I wanted.
Hah so now I’m just three posts down. ugh. I redid the Storm pin up that pissed my off so thoroughly last weekend. This one is at least proportionate if still not quite what I wanted. With any luck I will be able to put a longer post up today with all the drawings and why I hate them.
I really just want to spend all day every day drawing. I feel it would let me get better. I guess that boat sailed. meh.
whoa.That sucked. I was working on a couple of drawings for this weekends posts. When they wee done I looked at them and realized that they were, well, horrible. Like really bad. Totally out of proportion. Atrocious. Depressing. So here’s something old that doesn’t suck all that bad and let’s just say I owe you two new drawings. Hopefully I’ll learn from my mistakes, although historically that doesn’t seem likely.
this is a ten minute sketch I did at lunch today, instead of eating lunch. I just wasnt hungry. It was done in red colored pencil on this weird ass sage green scrap paper left over in the press room somewhere. I was reading “Wormwood Gentleman Corpse” and this used a similar technique. I screwed around in photoshop to put the words on the shirt. That took forever. My computer sucks.
I’m going to attempt to post something everyday for at least the rest of the month. It might be a drawing or a painting or just a sketch or a process piece, but something everyday until October. By then, I hope to have the hang of larger more formatted posts, which I will do every two weeks/ to a month. Those will include drawings, pin ups, illustrations and design work I’m doing, tattoo flash, plus more detailed explanations of process and reference.
This piece is part of my first flash sheet, which I will post at some point. It was an exercise in making pieces that are constructed like tattoos and gave me the idea of doing themed flash sheets. I want to do one or two sheets based around the names of goth songs and death rock bands. This one is a take on the Christian Death logo.
One of the things I’ve been doing lately as an exercise is pin ups of characters from things that I like. This was actually the first in the series. I wanted to do a Bela Lugosi style Dracula. the drawing was in pencil and then inked and scanned where i cleaned it up slightly. In the works is a more interesting comped image including a custom “bat” photo shop brush and a really cool looking pen and ink moon. I might try and put a mist text element into it. It’s just slow going comping anything in photoshop on this ‘puter. It is fucking ooollllddddd and sllllloooowww.
I have found a word press theme I like, (coraline) and need to get to editing it to my liking.
