Here is something I was playing with when I initially wanted to make my own website. It mirrors a business card I made. My intention was to have the site and my collateral have this style identity. Everything was going to be oldtimey and appear to be letter pressed, possibly even letter-pressing some of the physical collateral (business card, envelope, letterhead). As it became more apparent that this was above my capabilities at the time I decided to  start with something modular and more manageable.

Given that I have a new computer that can actually handle my attempts at illustration and design, maybe I’ll give it another shot.

Tentacles and Turtles

Some things I have been monkey-ing with over the past week.

A quick sketch then quickly colored in photoshop. I’m gonna be drawing eggs and tentacles for a while.

This is the second drawing. more refined. I think this style of drawing will work nice for comic book stuff.

Lastly, I’ve been drawing a bunch of robot turtles. I don’t remember if there are more or not posted here, but I will make some sort of post with a bunch of them, sometime soonish.

Busy at work and lazy at home. they switched my pills up and I get a headache at 1 pm everyday guaranteed. I need to make my upstairs work space more habitable and work there. I will make an inspiration post this weekend, and then hopefully one involving character design for one of my comics. Need to develop more of a schedule regarding these things, write on Tuesday, draw on Wednesday, scan and color on Thursday, that sort of thing. Well develop it and then actually follow it.

My step mom makes jam and I offered to do some design/illustration work for her. Now her jams are actually something special and she likes to mix up her fruits combos, so they’re pretty flamboyant. I did a cartoon version of her for the logo (which I will add later) and a couple of flamboyant fruits to complement her flamboyant jams. Technically they’re jams not jellies but her name is Michelle, and Shelly’s Jellys sounds so much better that Michelle’s Jams.

LINE ART:

This is the first scan of the oni painting. Prior to this I sketched the original image and cleaned it up by tracing it on a light box, fixing messy lines and altering proportions where necessary.

SHADING:

I start laying done initial tone and shade with a water proof black ink. I also fill in any flat black areas using the same ink.

COLOR:

I add color using water colors, building tone and depth gradually.

Here is where I add the finished painting. Color, more gray wash, and a coffee wash in the back ground. The photo is a little distorted due to curling, and the lighting is terrible despite photoshop corrections, but the result is decent enough.

New Puter

I have a new laptop that is seriously faster than my desktop. It’s not exactly new, it’s my bosses old dell and the video card went on it. Replacement cards generally go for a bout 350 so he opted for an entirely new computer instead and I got the laptop with the busted vid card. I found one eventually for about 200 bucks and replaced it myself, which required taking the whole damn thing apart, on thanksgiving morning ! I have a bunch of things to post and can effectively color them now. new stuff coming soon.

These are sketches I’m doing for  some knucklehead’s a friend’s tattoo. For the one on the right I referenced a drawing by Chris Conn for the pose, but I honestly looked at about a hundred girl head tattoos. This is a few drawings removed as well. The next step will be to trace it to line art and scan it into photoshop. There I’m going to make the spider lady symmetrical and comp some colors. Although I have to say i really like the way colored pencil looks on dark paper.

Here is the initial color. Originally I was planing this to be a wind or air elemental type guy, but he’s looking more aquatic now. I think I’m going to do a couple of color studies and decide which way to go from here. Ideally I could do that on the computer, that is if my computer wasn’t run by arthritic squirrels running on a rusty wheel.

I put the shading into the oni face. I figured out a better method of getting the gradients in black ink, so I can lay the color over them like a tattoo. It also means  I’ll have a cool intermediate phase of a black and white toned drawing.

I did a bunch of small character sketches for  one of the comics yesterday and came up with a really cool idea for the layout of the time problem comic. It would have less of a traditional panel based layout and more of mish mash that you can read in any order. each spread page would be one large drawing instead of 18 smaller ones. It would subvert the sequential, mimicking a lack of time. Or make it totally unreadable. either way it will be interesting. I also plan on making a vaudevillian poster for the “Chicken” in a traditional tattoo style. Lots of ideas these days, I wish I could get my output on par with my brainstorming. I would probably have to stop sleeping and maybe grow some arms. Ooh! I think I’ll draw that!

I finished this last night and took a really quick picture of it this morning. Its pretty cool I guess, it’s the first time I’ve used a coffee wash for the back ground, something I picked up from Angelique Houtkamp’s Tattoo Darling book.

Here is the second one. I light boxed it onto watercolor paper yesterday and scanned it this morning. I think I’m going to do a digitally colored version in addition to the watercolor painting.

I was going to post comic pages but I cant find the files or they aren’t on my thumb drive, which means they’re on my home computer and it’s gonna take me a year to put something together I can show.

no drawing today. I’ve just been reading comics blogs and thinking about process and inspiration. I’m gonna try to put together a inspiration post over the course of this weekend with pictures and links to things i’ve been into this lately. Things like Brandon Graham and his awesome work and equally entertaining and informative blog, that particular gang of comics guys, some shit i was into when I was kid, maybe some exerpts from old sketch books, and link to a slew of top notch web comics and maybe a close friend or two.

I’m really excited a bout doing and drawing at the moment, probably more than I’ve ever been. It’s carried over to a lot of different things one of them being my mind numbing soul sucking job. If I have to be here I am going to use it as an opportunity to become a better designer, which will hopefully make me a better artist and writer as a result.

Last night prior to having a significant amount of my hearing taken away from me forever, I was talking to my friend mark, and we were say how you dont really need to know how to do something in order to do it. You say “yes, I can do that” and then you figure it the fuck out! Naturally this doesnt apply to things like flying a jet or surgery, but thats how people figured how to do things in the first place. There is a saying that goes “you get good at kung fu by doing kung fu” which i will attribute to my sifu Stanly Ju, which is infinitely applicable. I feel like some blinders have been taken off, like i’ve rounded some corner. A lot of things that seemed like they would take forever are just coming naturally. Most things just take doing, and then keep doing it.

exterminator

There’s a ton of stuff I want to put up, but time and computing speeds conspire against me. This is a drawing I did as a character study. It is for a aside story called exterminator, that would be a six page comic addition to amnesiac. I t has William S. Burroughs as an unnamed exterminator fumigating Hugo Blue’s apartment, while they’re both in it and calling into question his recollection of his past.

This is one of the terrible ones from last weekend. It’s still a work in progress, but looks a lot better with some photoshop on it. I have to finish the flat colors and add the shades. This is the first of three drawings I did of storm. the last on is the one I like but it’s a little big to scan here.

The last thing I was working on this weekend was a couple pages of a comic that I don’t have a name for . I used to call it undisclosed metallic injection, which I think might be ok for say a chapter name, but as the title of the book, not so much.I am going to serialize it here when I get it together, maybe three pages at a time.

Martian Chemist and Captian Ahab

double post. I’m still figuring out formatting and stuff and it’s still slow going due to my computing power. Anyway. These two seemed to go together. One is from a conceptual drawing class. I forget who the guy is, i think he’s a chemist or something like that. there was a reason I choose him, but I can’t remember what it is. The second is new, it’s a drawing of captain ahab. As far as drawings go I like it, but its not as mindlessly obsessed as I wanted.

Hah so now I’m just three posts down. ugh. I redid the Storm pin up that pissed my off so thoroughly last weekend. This one is at least proportionate if still not quite what I wanted. With any luck I will be able to put a longer post up today with all the drawings and why I hate them.

I really just want to spend all day every day drawing. I feel it would let me get better. I guess that boat sailed. meh.

whoa.That sucked. I was working on a couple of drawings for this weekends posts. When they wee done I looked at them and realized that they were, well, horrible. Like really bad. Totally out of proportion. Atrocious. Depressing. So here’s something old that doesn’t suck all that bad and let’s just say I owe you two new drawings. Hopefully I’ll learn from my mistakes, although historically that doesn’t seem likely.
